Quick Sizing Matching for Cold Storage Compressor, Evaporator & Condenser

  1. Cold Storage Temperature Classification & Basic Cooling Load
  • High temp storage (0~8°C): 100W/m³
  • Medium temp storage (-5~-12°C): 150W/m³
  • Low temp storage (-15~-25°C): 220W/m³

Total cooling load = Storage volume (m³) × Unit load



  1. Compressor Quick Selection

1 horsepower (HP) ≈ 2kW cooling capacity at low temperature
Compressor capacity = Total load × 1.1~1.2 (safety margin)
HP conversion: Compressor capacity ÷ 2

Simple HP reference

  • High temp: 1HP covers 8~10 m³
  • Medium temp: 1HP covers 5~6 m³
  • Low temp: 1HP covers 3~4 m³



  1. Evaporator Sizing (Air cooler & Aluminum pipe)

Match heat exchange area by compressor HP

  • High temp 1HP → 4㎡ evaporator area
  • Medium temp 1HP → 5~6㎡ evaporator area
  • Low temp 1HP → 7~8㎡ evaporator area

Small warehouse aluminum pipe: Volume × 0.45㎡/m³
Select air cooler model directly by HP



  1. Condenser Sizing (Air-cooled type most common)
  • High temp 1HP → 8~9㎡ condenser area
  • Medium temp 1HP → 10~11㎡ condenser area
  • Low temp 1HP → 11~13㎡ condenser area

Water-cooled & evaporative condenser: Area is 1/15~1/20 of air-cooled type

 

30-second Matching Steps

  1. Calculate storage volume and confirm temperature range
  1. Determine required compressor HP
  1. Match evaporator area according to compressor HP
  1. Select corresponding condenser area

 

Practical Example

100m³ low temp storage (-18°C)

  1. Cooling load: 100 × 220 = 22000W = 22kW
  1. Compressor with margin: 22 × 1.2 = 26.4kW ≈ 13~14HP low temp compressor
  1. Evaporator area: 13.2 × 7 = 92.4㎡
  1. Condenser area: 13.2 × 12 = 158.4㎡



Key Notes

  • Choose slightly larger compressor for stable cooling performance
  • Undersized evaporator causes heavy frost and slow temperature drop
  • Undersized condenser leads to high pressure trip and compressor damage
  • Use oversized condenser for low temperature cold storage
